The Different Routes That Lead Us to Yoga

Have you ever been driving to a familiar destination only to be met with a bright yellow sign announcing, “Road Closed – Diversion Ahead”?

At first, it can feel frustrating. It’s not the route you planned. It may take longer, include unfamiliar roads, or even leave you questioning whether you’re heading in the right direction at all. Life has a way of doing the same thing.

Very few of us arrive at yoga because life has been perfectly straightforward. More often than not, we find ourselves on an unexpected detour.

For some, the diversion comes in the form of stress. A demanding job, family responsibilities, or the relentless pace of modern life leaves us searching for somewhere to simply breathe.

For others, it’s physical. An injury, chronic pain, or the feeling that our body isn’t moving as freely as it once did becomes the turning point that brings us to the mat.

Sometimes the diversion is emotional. Grief, anxiety, burnout, or significant life changes can make us long for something that offers steadiness amidst uncertainty.

And sometimes, the route is much lighter. A friend invites us to a class. We become curious after seeing someone practise yoga. We simply decide to try something new.

Every journey is different and no one asks how many roads you took to get there. What matters is that you arrived.

The beautiful thing about yoga is that it meets you wherever you are. Whether you come seeking strength, stillness, healing, fitness, connection, or simply an hour away from the demands of daily life, your reason is enough.

Just like a road diversion, what initially feels like an inconvenience can lead us somewhere unexpectedly beautiful.

Yoga reminds us that there is no single right path. Some journeys are winding. Some are direct. Some involve stopping, turning around, and beginning again. The destination isn’t perfection it’s presence and sometimes the best journeys are the ones we never planned.
